Widgeon Marsh is located north of Coquitlam and is part of southwest British Colombia's largest freshwater wetland and some of the most sensitive ecological lands in the region. The route follows Quarry Road to a meadow, where a short loop takes you to a viewpoint looking out at the scenic marsh area near Siwash Island. The park is a great place for bird watchers and families to explore.
The park had been closed to the public for decades and was re-opened in the Fall of 2025 after Metro Vancouver conducted several environmental studies and slope stabilization work. The park still has restricted access and parking passes must be obtained during weekends and statutory holidays for a maximum duration of 3 hours.
Begin your walk from the gravel parking lot by passing the map board and following Quarry Road for 2.4km. The road is mostly paved with a few short gravel sections and minimal change in elevation. The road will cross a bridge over Stewart Creek just before arriving at the meadows.
Immediately after the bridge at a sign, go right and follow the gravel path as this is the start of the meadow loop. The path slightly descends before quickly making its way to the viewpoint where you are treated to some of the region's best scenery as you look out over the marshland. Many birds can be spotted at Widgeon Marsh, including trumpeter swans, common goldeneye, great blue herons, ruby-crowned kinglets, and many more.
After enjoying the viewpoint, walk back to the fence and follow the narrow Meadow Trail to the right. This trail passes along some of the marshland offering more opportunities to spot birds. The trail ends at a clearing with picnic tables.
To return to the parking lot, walk the short distance back to the road and go left towards the bridge over Stewart Creek. Follow Quarry Road for 2.4km, returning back to the parking lot where you began your hike.
