What gear do I need for winter and shoulder-season hikes?
We don't recommend hiking in the winter at higher elevations due to the risk of avalanches and challenging winter weather conditions. The mountains can be quite unpredictable in the winter, even the North Shore mountains that are relatively close to the city of Vancouver experience difficult and unpredictable winter conditions that can quickly result in hikers getting into dangerous situations.
If you do plan on hiking in the winter or shoulder seasons, at minimum, carry microspikes or traction devices, hiking poles, and an extra insulating layer for any trail that climbs above about 800m between November and May. For trails with firmer or deeper snow, you need snowshoes, proper winter clothing, avalanche safety gear (beacon, probe, shovel), and the training to use them. If you’re not sure whether a trail passes through avalanche terrain, treat it as if it does until you’ve confirmed otherwise.
