What should I pack for a typical Vancouver day hike?

The Ten Essentials, plus: a comfortable 20–30 L daypack, 2–3 L of water, high-calorie snacks and a lunch, a rain jacket and rain pants (this is the west coast), an insulating mid-layer (fleece or synthetic puffy), a toque and gloves outside of midsummer, sun protection, bug repellent in season, and a small dry bag or ziplock for your phone and wallet. Add traction devices (microspikes) and poles for shoulder-season and winter hikes at elevation.

Here’s a good guide on what you should bring on your day hike in the Vancouver and southwestern British Columbia region.
