How should I dress for a rainy day on the coast?

Layer in non-cotton fabrics: a merino or synthetic base layer, a light fleece or synthetic mid-layer, and a fully waterproof shell jacket with a hood and pit zips. Add waterproof pants, gaiters, and a pack rain cover for heavier rain. Keep a warm dry layer sealed in a dry bag in your pack for breaks. Cotton holds moisture and cools the body dangerously fast when wet.
