Do I need trekking poles?

Poles aren’t mandatory, but they significantly reduce knee strain on the long, steep descents that are typical of North Shore and Sea-to-Sky trails (Grouse Grind, BCMC, the Lions, Garibaldi). They also help with balance on roots, river crossings, and snow. Collapsible aluminium or carbon poles with adjustable length are a common choice.
