How do I keep my dog safe on the trail?
Carry extra water and a collapsible bowl, pack out all waste (including in bags), watch for overheating in summer (dogs cool less efficiently than humans), check for ticks afterwards, avoid exposed granite and snow-covered trails where paws can get cut or frostbitten, and keep your dog leashed near cliffs, wildlife, and other hikers. Not every trail suits every dog — long rocky descents and hot rock scrambles can be hard on paws and joints.
