Why shouldn’t I cut switchbacks?

Cutting switchbacks, or taking a shortcut, causes erosion that can take decades to heal in subalpine and alpine environments, and it destroys the surrounding vegetation. Staying on the trail — even when it’s muddy — is a core Leave No Trace principle. Walk through the mud, not around it.
