What are the Ten Essentials?
The Ten Essentials, as promoted by BC search-and-rescue groups, are: (1) a headlamp or flashlight with extra batteries, (2) a signalling device (a loud whistle), (3) fire-starting materials (lighter and waterproof matches), (4) extra warm, non-cotton clothing, (5) a pocketknife or multi-tool, (6) emergency shelter (bivy or tarp), (7) food and water, (8) a first-aid kit, (9) navigation tools (map, compass, and a charged phone or GPS), and (10) sun protection. Carry all ten, every hike, year-round.
