The West Coast Trail
Date: January 5, 2008The West Coast Trail is a world famous 77km trail along the southwestern coast of Vancouver Island. Originally built as a means for survivors of shipwrecks to reach civilization, the trail has become a popular destination for outdoor adventure seekers wanting to challenge themselves through the rugged yet beautiful terrain.
Located along the Pacific Ocean, the trail winds along the coastal beaches and rainforest offering spectacular scenery of waterfalls, sea arches, and long ocean beaches. Ladders are in place along the trail through canyons and suspension bridges and cable cars are used at several river crossings. Campsites are located throughout the West Coast Trail, each offering its own unique view and scenic setting with the sound of the Pacific Ocean waves in the background.
The West Coast Trail requires a high level of physical fitness and endurance and the climate around the temperate rainforest can make weather conditions unpredictable. Heavy rainfall is common along the trail and ladders, rocks, and wooden walkways can become very slippery. There are no amenities along the trail, so hikers must pack all their food and supplies with them for the duration of the hike. On average, the trail takes about 6 to 7 days to complete.
The West Coast Trail is open from May 1 to September 30th and hikers must register and pay $120 CAD (as of 2007) to obtain a trail use permit and access a couple of ferry crossings. There are only a limited number of permits for each day in order to help preserve the rainforest. Six waitlist passes are available each day on a first come, first serve basis.
Hikers can choose to start the West Coast Trail from the north at the town of Bamfield or the south from the town of Port Renfrew. Transportation arrangements must be made separately in order to arrive at the your select starting point and be picked up at the finishing point.
