You do not have to shell out big bucks for maps. Go to ibycus.com and download the 2.1 version topo of Canada, including street layouts in towns and cities. You'll have to hunt up on the net instructions on how to install it properly (not hard, worked flawlessly for me). The entire file is over 3 gigs and I've not found a micro SD card over 2 that is not also HC, which you apparently can't use in the GPS. So when uploading the file, I included only maps for southern Canada, all of BC and Alberta and southern Yukon/NWT. That came to about 1.5 gigs. Then by hunting around on the net I've found loads of hikes with GPS data. You just save the file to your hard drive and open it with Mapsource (comes with GPS). The files are usually Tracks, so I build routes from them, as you can store 50 routes but only 20 tracks. A little work but beats paying $150, though you'll need that if you want autorouting and all the built-in POIs.

There was a bit of a learning curve in all this so give yourself a few days to get all loaded up.
